Diabetes is a condition in which the body cannot cope normally with sugar and other carbohydrates.  In the general population it affects 1 in 25 people but in Care Homes at least 11% have diabetes and many others are undiagnosed.  Type 1 diabetes tends to affect younger people and is treated with insulin injections and diet.  Type 2 diabetes usually affects older people and is treated by diet, diet and tablets or in some cases insulin injection.  It is a progressive disease and treatments may need changing over time....

What is Glaucoma

In simple terms, Glaucoma is a build up of pressure in the eye which causes damage to the optic nerve. It is usually painless and the onset of symptoms is so gradual that in the early stages any vision loss can go unnoticed. If undetected and left untreated, Glaucoma can cause blindness. With early detection and treatment however the condition can usually be successfully managed to prevent vision loss.

Macular degeneration or AMD as it is often known is a condition which affects the central part of the vision and can cause difficulty with reading, watching television, recognising faces and really anything which involves detail. It is mainly found in older people and is estimated to affect one in three of the over 80's. It is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK.
